Petrel Ave Additions

  • A contemporary interpretation of the local beach house vernacular. Located just moments from Miami Beach on the Gold Coast, the project is inspired by its coastal setting and relaxed lifestyle.
  • Designed across three spacious levels with generous east-facing balconies to maximise natural light, sea breezes, and indoor/outdoor living.
  • Materiality draws on traditional beach houses and original Queenslander timber detailing, reimagined with a moodier, darker exterior palette.
  • Pitched roof forms reference classic beach house architecture while creating raked ceilings that enhance internal spatial volume.
  • Interior spaces feature a light, neutral palette, providing a timeless backdrop.
  • Built by Makin Construction.
  • Photographed by Kristian Van Der Beek. KvdB

Perched high on Hill Ave, Burleigh Heads — a home suspended between canopy and coastline.

Crisp white planes float above battened timber and off-form concrete, framing the Gold Coast skyline from every terrace. The pool wraps the living edge in a curve of stone; deep verandahs and a slatted entry court temper the northern sun, while glass dissolves the line between kitchen, deck and horizon.

Now under construction at Mudgeeraba — a family home stepped down its sloping site beneath horizontal planes.

Board-formed concrete and blackened timber hold the house to the hill, while planted terraces blur each level into the landscape. A cantilevered pool floats over the carport below; deep eaves and screened verandahs do the climatic work, filtering the sunlight and opening the living rooms to the valley breeze.
