Hinterland Residence

  • The design was perched on a steep embankment overlooking west to the Gold Coast Hinterland Range. Two rectilinear forms intersecting to create privacy from the entrance & private pool courtyard beyond.

  • The entry sequence is skewed on an angle that slices into the two storey form to set up a view axis to the hinterland range.

  • Natural material selections add a warmth & appropriate response to the Hinterland setting.

  • Ground floor walls open out with large stacker doors blurring the enclosure & connecting the occupants with the natural bushland setting.

  • Built by Makin Constructions.

Albion Duplex

  • The stark volumes of the Albion Avenue Duplex were a reinvention of the traditional gable home.

  • The design grew from a homage to the existing brick dwelling that stood on the site combined with the idea to reinterpret the lightweight costal vernacular.
  • Two different homes now sit on the site, providing privacy and individuality from the existing streetscape.

  • Light and breeze were concepts that powered a need for voids which provide open connections throughout the homes and help to passively cool them.
  • Built by Nick at Makin Constructions.

Willow Vale Farm

  • Willow Vale Farm was an extensive redevelopment to an existing farm stay property. The scope included a barn addition adjacent to the horse arena, modifications and additions to an existing cabin with outdoor entertaining areas and parking and a substantial renovation to the existing farmhouse.

  • The renovations were inspired from traditional Queenslander detailing and material palette.
  • External spaces were prioritised to celebrate the site and setting of South East Queensland with its’ outdoor living.

  • The barn design was constructed with custom milled reclaimed and recycled hardwood in a post and beam typology. Custom built onsite with exquisite detailing for large scale members.
  • Connections to the landscape were established with outdoor areas & connection links from internal areas.
  • Built by Nick & his team at Makin Constructions.

Bujerum Apartments

  • This original 1940’s beach cottage was stripped back to its frame & re-designed. An additional storey was added & converted into a boutique 5-unit holiday development.

  • The original 1940’s character was maintained & detailed to reference the original typology & character in the Burleigh area & maintain its sense of place amongst the concrete boxes.

  • A re-interpreted battened staircase to the rear provides filtered shelter to the occupants & acts as a lantern at night.

  • North facing doors disappear into cavity walls & allow cross ventilation form the cooling summer sea breezes.

Burleigh Headland Residence

  • The site is positioned high on Burleigh Headland, adjacent to the National Park where the strong environmental context of the siting has generated a design response that allows the occupants to connect with its natural setting with internal views into the tree canopies & North across the Ocean to the Gold Coast skyline.
  • The building form has been broken down into two pavilion like forms to allow outdoor spaces on the upper level living zones & again celebrate the outdoor sub-tropical climate of the site & allow light & cooling sea breezes to penetrate.
  • The detailing of the building is in its local vernacular of lightweight, beach house timber dwellings with fine timber & batten qualities evident in original 1940’s houses of the area & reinterprets it into a contemporary beach house.

Woodgee Street Additions

  • The Woodgee Street Additions were designed to capitalise on the expansive views over Currumbin Beach and South East down to Greenmount.

  • The exposed detailing was reflective of the original fibro cottage on the site and to reinterpret the lightweight coastal vernacular with some contemporary materiality.
  • A large Eastern deck was added to provide an external living space on the steep site capitalising on the ocean views.

  • Operable bifold louvred shutters were added to the South East façade to control prevailing breezes.
  • Living spaces were added underneath for a growing family and Great Dane that had outgrown the current fibro dwelling.

Seagull Avenue Residence

Seagull Avenue Residence

  • Seagull Avenue Residence was a reimagined Beach House for clients whose own parents built the original Beach House on the site at Nobby Beach in the 1940’s. Back when they visited from Brisbane for Beach Holidays and had to forge their own track to the beach from the site being one of the first dwellings in the area.

  • The character of the design was a reflection and reinterpretation of the original beach house dwelling in materiality and detailing.
  • Broken down batten features allow light and breezes to penetrate whilst providing filtered screening to the elements and privacy to adjoining higher density developments.

  • Internal courtyard spaces were positioned on the entry axis which also opens each side to function as an external breezeway two storey void penetrating the site, also allowing connectivity to the streetscape and community.
  • The outcome has allowed the next generation to also enjoy the site as a treasured Holiday Beach House destination with the capacity to now cater for extended family and honour the original build.
  • Built by Pat at Firestone Constructions.

Parnki Residence

  • Parnki Parade Residence is the first constructed of a Dual Dwelling & Re-configured Lot Development Application on a canal front site at Palm beach.
  • The fanning of the block led to the stepped layered facade. The building form opens to the waterfront as you move through the property due to a compressed site entry.

  • The stepping nature of the form allows Northern light and predominant NE cooling breezes to penetrate breaking down the mass.

  • Materials were selected for the coastal environment. Composite timbers to give a natural element with black detailing. The front powdercoat batten screen was designed to add privacy to the street-front from the front bedroom, allowing filtered light & breeze, whilst adding visual interest to the street facade.

  • Neutral textures were utilised internally with a playful subtle colour palette with a feature of terrazzo tile for a pop of colour.

Koala Park Residence

  • Koala Park Residence is a contemporary residence embodying coastal luxury.
  • Situated in Koala Park, a highly coveted area in Burleigh Heads nestled against Tallebudgera Creek and Burleigh Heads National Park.
  • The residence adopts an open-plan layout that is oriented towards the outdoor entertaining space to establish a seameless indoor-outdoor connection. This openess also allows for natural light to invade the interior spaces.
  • At the heart of the coastal retreat, a striking curved staircase serves as an architectural centrepiece and provides a graceful transition to the second floor.
  • A series of curved walls flank the front facade of the residence to provide a sense of privacy from the street.

HABITAT HOUSE | Episode 02 — Designing with the Site

Every great home begins with a design that responds to its surroundings.

In Episode 02, we step away from the construction site and into the design studio to explore the thinking behind Habitat House.

From the arrangement of the floor plans and the relationship between living spaces, to capturing coastal views, maximising natural light and responding to neighbouring properties, every design decision has a purpose.

Wayne walks through the architectural plans and 3D model, explaining how the site’s unique characteristics have influenced the layout, orientation and overall form of our new home.

It’s an insight into the design process and the decisions that happen long before construction begins. A little longer this one as there is a bit to explain.

Follow along as we bring @habitat__house from the drawing board to reality.

North to the water at Bight Court, Mermaid Waters — a canal-front residence grown from timber, stone and greenery.

Breeze-block screens and battened timber wrap the street edge in privacy, while planted terraces spill from every level, blurring the house into its garden. Inside, a double-height living room opens north over the water — timber ceilings drawing the eye from marble hearth to skyline. Biophilic design doing what it does best: light, air, and green in every room.

Perched high on Hill Ave, Burleigh Heads — a home suspended between canopy and coastline.

Crisp white planes float above battened timber and off-form concrete, framing the Gold Coast skyline from every terrace.
