Vespa Project is a striking subtropical retreat that masterfully balances privacy, openness, and connection to nature. Designed as a sanctuary for a young family, the residence blends raw concrete, dark timber, and lush greenery to create an industrial-inspired yet warm living environment.

A monolithic western facade shields the home from the afternoon sun, while a floating subtropical roof and cascading gardens provide additional protection and visual softness.

The design seamlessly integrates indoor and outdoor spaces, natural light & ventilation, fostering effortless subtropical living which is designed to occupy the edges, connecting seamlessly with the landscape.

Private internal spaces are intentionally designed to contrast, offering serene retreats that balance the open, outward-facing aspects of the home.

At its core, Vespa Project is a responsive, adaptable home—designed to meet the evolving needs of its occupants while serving as a sanctuary that blurs the boundaries between built form and its intensified subtropical setting.

Nestled along the tranquil shores of Currumbin Beach on Australia’s Gold Coast, our direct Beachfront Residential Architecture Project seamlessly integrates the artistry of design with the serenity of its natural surroundings. A masterpiece of coastal living, this exceptional development is an ode to the seamless harmony between architecture and the environment.

Crafted with meticulous attention to detail, the homes feature a stunning façade adorned with white weatherboards that reflect the sun’s gentle embrace. Crisp white battens elegantly serve a dual purpose: to grace the exterior with a touch of contemporary allure while providing refuge from the blazing western sun.

Inspired by the surrounding landscape, we’ve curated a materials palette that pays homage to the coastal charm. Genuine stone elements punctuate the architecture, anchoring the structure to the earth beneath. This harmonious combination not only adds visual depth but also resonates with the rugged beauty of the shoreline.

Step into a world of tranquility as you enter the mid internal courtyard. Designed to be a private sanctuary, it offers respite from the predominant southerly sea breezes, providing a calm enclave where you can unwind and recharge. Here, nature intertwines with architecture, creating a space where light dances on stone surfaces and verdant plants sway in unison.

At dawn, witness the breathtaking spectacle of the rising sun from the comfort of your home. The architecture thoughtfully opens to the easterly aspect, allowing unobstructed views of the ever-changing sea and sky. Each day begins with a masterpiece of nature’s creation, as the shimmering waters greet the morning light. Architecture becomes a canvas, nature the inspiration, of a life well-lived by the sea.

A contemporary design with modernist principles & a natural material palette. Timber, stone & off form concrete contrast against the simple floating rendered forms. Inspired by the Kauffman Desert House by Richard Neutra in 1946. This design has a similar timeless simplicity.

Screening elements have been incorporated to respond to the site & location it is sited. Sea breezes are allowed to penetrate the house while harsh morning & afternoon summer sun & heat gain is filtered.

This contemporary design explores concepts of textures, landscapes, and materiality, creating a private sanctuary that allows an abundance of natural light and indoor/outdoor flow.

With spaces for both socialising and relaxation, the layout of the house is perfect for entertaining guests or hiding away with a good book.

The design accommodates multiple spaces for varying weather conditions and seasons, with landscape veins running through recesses in the built form to have an adjacency to the internal at all times.

The lower level of the house is designed in a U-shape around the landscaped pool courtyard on the north, with large glass doors and louvers that bring light to all areas of the lower level at all times of the day.

A large void space over the stair and lower hallway area connects the spaces visually, allowing natural light to transfer through the void space.

The detailing of the stairs, timber joinery, and custom walk-in robe add depth to the feel of the space, while featuring oak timber flooring throughout.

The architecture is timeless and reflects passive principles of light, energy, and breeze while taking into account the sub-tropical climate in which the house is situated.

The second RSL prize home Habitat Studio has been commissioned to Design. Set on the beachfront at Currumbin Beach the site has direct beachfront access with views to the horizon & south east to Coolangatta.
