Redhead Surf Lifesaving Club

  • The existing Surf Club was transformed with a significant renovation that included new entry spaces, commercial kitchen & enclosure to internal bar & deck areas.

  • The entry sequence allowed separation between surf club members & functions & provided a sheltered thickened gable & stair end that defined the Surf Club & entrance.

  • Materials & detailing were selected to resist the harsh coastal setting & respond to local micro climate qualities with North East cooling breezes & harsh southerly winds & storms. Club colours were incorporated into the details.

Kingscliff Street Additions

Kingscliff Additions

  • These additions were to an existing seaside bungalow & were designed to complement the existing dwelling whilst at the same time re-interpret the current modern beachside context.

  • The existing dwelling for a young family had a disconnect to the large rear yard so the revised intent was to incorporate the site, extend & open out to the yard & allow connections from living spaces to these external landscaped zones.

  • The design detailing responds to the site & climate with a shear blank western blade wall & north aspect sunhoods to limit solar heat gain. The materials were a consideration of the beachside setting with black detailing to reflect the existing.

  • Built by JT Master Builders who won the HIA award for this project in the Additions $300-$600k category.

Nobby Parade Duplex

  • A difficult site with 2 street accesses that pinched towards the Eastern edge. The response was a back to back development with a 3 storey form to the narrow aspect of the site.

  • A 3 storey void was maintained on entry to allow light & breezes to penetrate & circulate through the internal spaces as well as provide a connection through the floor levels from within.

  • The 2 storey form & wider site was opened to the external courtyard landscaping. Large dominant wrapping elements with overhanging decks define the entry & provide some shelter to the West aspect.

  • Built by NorthMac Constructions.

  • An original fibro farmhouse relocated to the Burleigh site underwent a sensitive renovation for a young couple & a cat to add additional master bedroom space & large external North facing outdoor decking with adjacent pool.

  • Key to this design was respecting the current dwelling & complementing the existing character with carefully measured detailing & material selections. Another project grateful for the clients to maintain the history & character in the context.

Karingal Townhouses

  • Engaged for Development Application (DA) Approval only, this 71 townhouse development is located in the growth corridor between the Gold Coast & Brisbane.

  • The development provides a large communal space area to promote community & resident interaction. The townhouse designs were specific to respond to the sub-tropical climate in which they are sited & are individually considered dependant on aspect to pick up Northern light, cooling breezes & minimise Western heat gain.

  • The development is a great example of why affordable housing doesn’t need to compromise on design, layout & siting thought.

Brake Street Units

  • The development was a re-interpretation of the duplex typology for a narrow site. The dwellings were stacked in a Class 2 configuration with similar floor plates on the lower & upper levels. The mid floor was split with additional bedroom spaces to each dwelling

  • Private roof top areas accessible from the units were provided with outdoor entertaining areas, BBQ spaces and rooftop pools. The rooftops were utilised so these outdoor spaces could capitalise on views over Burleigh Headland and the surf break and ocean beyond
  • A heavier more brutalist form was used on the design being softened by natural materials of timber & stone

  • Larger North aspect decks & outdoor areas were positioned to capitalise on views, breezes & Northern light. Large overhangs for the sub-tropical site
  • Currently under construction with Condev

HABITAT HOUSE | Episode 02 — Designing with the Site

Every great home begins with a design that responds to its surroundings.

In Episode 02, we step away from the construction site and into the design studio to explore the thinking behind Habitat House.

From the arrangement of the floor plans and the relationship between living spaces, to capturing coastal views, maximising natural light and responding to neighbouring properties, every design decision has a purpose.

Wayne walks through the architectural plans and 3D model, explaining how the site’s unique characteristics have influenced the layout, orientation and overall form of our new home.

It’s an insight into the design process and the decisions that happen long before construction begins. A little longer this one as there is a bit to explain.

Follow along as we bring @habitat__house from the drawing board to reality.

North to the water at Bight Court, Mermaid Waters — a canal-front residence grown from timber, stone and greenery.

Breeze-block screens and battened timber wrap the street edge in privacy, while planted terraces spill from every level, blurring the house into its garden. Inside, a double-height living room opens north over the water — timber ceilings drawing the eye from marble hearth to skyline. Biophilic design doing what it does best: light, air, and green in every room.

Perched high on Hill Ave, Burleigh Heads — a home suspended between canopy and coastline.

Crisp white planes float above battened timber and off-form concrete, framing the Gold Coast skyline from every terrace.
