Bondi Beach Esplanade

  • A Boutique Hotel & Mixed Use Development on a key site in Bondi Beach overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The project is set to reactivate the Foreshore & surrounding commercial district.
  • The building form references the dynamic topography of the surrounding ridge lines & undulating Bondi Beach coastline.
  • The design encourages pedestrian movement and interaction with the site while providing connections to the street-front with balcony edges that expand and contract.
  • The private beachfront & park facade is a more expansive rectilinear form, more transparent in nature, which provides guests with the breathtaking uninterrupted views of the Pacific Ocean.
  • The project has been submitted to Council for DA Approval.

San Fernando Residence

  • A new home for an expanding family wanting more room to live on a rural site which also incorporates a new workspace to the rear of the property.

  • The design was conceived with modernist elements in simple single storey box volumes linked with walkways. The link walkways gave opportunities for adjacent garden areas and allowed light and breeze to penetrate the box forms.
  • With the client’s business ‘Envirocoat Concrete Concepts’ in all things polished concrete, this materiality was utilised beautifully in all elements from flooring through to vanity and bench-tops.

  • External forms were softened with a natural material palette consisting of stone, concrete & timber claddings reflecting the bush setting.
  • Clear connections between internal & external living spaces were blurred to capitalise on the outdoor living suited to the temperate climate and views to the Gold Coast Skyline.
  • Built by David Radic Prestige Homes.

Brake Street Units

  • The development was a re-interpretation of the duplex typology for a narrow site. The dwellings were stacked in a vertical L-shape Class 2 configuration with replicated living floor plates on the lower & upper levels. The mid floor plan was split as additional bedroom spaces to each upper & lower dwelling.

  • Private roof top areas accessible from the units were provided with outdoor entertaining areas, BBQ spaces and rooftop pools. The rooftops were utilised so outdoor spaces could capitalise on views over Burleigh Headland, The Point and Ocean beyond.
  • A heavier more brutalist form was used on the design being softened by natural materials of timber & stone.

  • Larger North aspect decks & outdoor areas were positioned to capitalise on views, breezes & Northern light. Large overhangs for the sub-tropical site

Tawarri One Residence

  • House 1 in a dual dwelling & reconfigured lot development in Koala Park for two new detached dwellings.

  • On a 330sqm North East aspect site the dwelling was designed to incorporate the open aspect, wrapping forms to the West and South leaving an open North East courtyard and aspect.
  • The design was that of a contemporary coastal nature, minimalist in forms with articulated detailing and screening elements to break down the forms. The upper volumes were designed to float above a lower living space that opens to the courtyard, pool areas and views to Burleigh Heads National Park.

  • The programming of the house was to allow a sanctuary, or resort style home living to external spaces with internal zones further separated in master and kids bedroom and living areas.
  • The open nature and connection to landscape on the site reflects its sub-tropical location.

Sunbrite Coastal

  • A contemporary Beach House with considered detailing drawing on the local vernacular. The character & materiality is reflective of typical Beach House & original Queenslander fine timber detailing.
  • A Northern courtyard was created between the street-front carport & main dwelling living spaces to capitalise on Northern aspect light, breeze & the beachside location.
  • Pitched roof forms reflect the beach house typology & provide opportunities for raked ceilings to maximise internal spatial volumes. The opportunity extends to then allow beautiful expressed timber detailing. Interior Design was left as a neutral palette with light materials & finishes able to be dressed up with coastal furniture pieces & artwork.

RSL Prize Home

  • The first of many RSL prize homes Habitat Studio has been commissioned to Design. Set on the beachfront at Golden Four Drive the site has direct beachfront access with views to the horizon & south east to Coolangatta.

  • The design was conceived as a contemporary beach house that was permeable to the beachfront & adjacent active pathway. Material were lightweight in nature to reflect original beach cottages with battening screens to break down solid forms and allow privacy, filtered light and breezes to penetrate.
  • An upper volume floats over the deck below providing shelter and a constrained response to 2x sewer mains that ran through the small 405sq.m site. The operable beachfront façade allows the ground plane to penetrate the living spaces with more private upper contained volumes.

  • A central void breezeway on entry provides a direct axis to the beachfront and views beyond. The curved window aligns with the driveway entry down a battle-axe site to act as an interesting form and a way finding element for the dwelling.
  • Materials reflect the beach front location internally with Tasmanian Oak fit out, honed concrete breezeway flooring & timber floor to habitable public areas.

Petrel Ave Additions

  • A contemporary interpretation of the local beach house vernacular. Located just moments from Miami Beach on the Gold Coast, the project is inspired by its coastal setting and relaxed lifestyle.
  • Designed across three spacious levels with generous east-facing balconies to maximise natural light, sea breezes, and indoor/outdoor living.
  • Materiality draws on traditional beach houses and original Queenslander timber detailing, reimagined with a moodier, darker exterior palette.
  • Pitched roof forms reference classic beach house architecture while creating raked ceilings that enhance internal spatial volume.
  • Interior spaces feature a light, neutral palette, providing a timeless backdrop.

Fingal Residence

  • The Fingal Residence was created to provide a barrier to the street with the entire western faced able to be closed off for privacy & West sun solar heat gain.
  • The creation of this fortress offers a simple transition from public to private that than opens dramatically to a private courtyard oasis.
  • The two wings of the home wedge out into the garden to allow northern light and breeze into the permeable courtyard.
  • The bottom levels retract to thin the overall volume and seemingly cantilever the upper level.
  • Battened pergola for filtered light edge conditions. Cross ventilation, light, breezes and void spaces all contribute to the lightness of this costal family home.
  • The materiality relates to the setting in design and in robust, hardy elements suited  for the costal environmental.

Paradise Waters Residence

  • This new residence was actually a renovation project utilising the existing ground floor slab & external walls. With the client being a structural engineer allowed some flexibility in repositioning additional volumes.

  • The Residence won the Master Builders Awards top accolade at Gold Coast, Queensland State & Australia wide National level for a Residential project.
  • The design was conceived as a minimalist project with simple volumetric forms balanced on lower structure and cantilevering to provide cover below. Roof forms were extended to suit the subtropical climate and provide double height voids to the entry sequence & rear canal.

  • The material palette was minimalistic in approach with simple rendered forms, feature off form concrete breaking down to timber look battening for privacy, filtered light & breezes. The battening articulated the general massing forms. Timber & stone material provided a more natural palette contrasting with the minimalist render.

  • The central courtyard and pool area provides a sanctuary from both the street front and canal front wedged between two adjacent forms protecting this space. An entry sequence was provided from the front gate entry through to the front door through this courtyard space.

Mt Whitsunday Residence

  • The Mt Whitsunday residence sits above Airlie Beach overlooking the Whitsunday Islands beyond.
  • The residence sits on a difficult elevated site & was designed to open to the panoramic views North over Airlie Beach & East to the Whitsunday Islands. Design elements are of a mid century modernist nature & finer detailing reflect the tropical climate of the site.
  • The design is generated around an open central double void courtyard area that will be the focal meeting area. The courtyard also acts to separate & rationalise living public & private areas in the house.

HABITAT HOUSE | Episode 02 — Designing with the Site

Every great home begins with a design that responds to its surroundings.

In Episode 02, we step away from the construction site and into the design studio to explore the thinking behind Habitat House.

From the arrangement of the floor plans and the relationship between living spaces, to capturing coastal views, maximising natural light and responding to neighbouring properties, every design decision has a purpose.

Wayne walks through the architectural plans and 3D model, explaining how the site’s unique characteristics have influenced the layout, orientation and overall form of our new home.

It’s an insight into the design process and the decisions that happen long before construction begins. A little longer this one as there is a bit to explain.

Follow along as we bring @habitat__house from the drawing board to reality.

North to the water at Bight Court, Mermaid Waters — a canal-front residence grown from timber, stone and greenery.

Breeze-block screens and battened timber wrap the street edge in privacy, while planted terraces spill from every level, blurring the house into its garden. Inside, a double-height living room opens north over the water — timber ceilings drawing the eye from marble hearth to skyline. Biophilic design doing what it does best: light, air, and green in every room.
